Bismillah..
First time listening to Syaikh Hamza Yusuf LIVE in person at MUIS audi last Thursday, and I realised why some of my close friends (esp. ustzh Farhana Munshi) liked his lessons so well..
maasyaAllah.
About how we're losing sense of beauty.
Such as losing poetry which carries the beauty of language; embedding meaning in language. And teaching us how to meditate on meanings.
The Great Sin of our time, is the Sin of Distractability. We're so distracted by all these gadgets that we hardly have any patience to even sit still (w/out taking the phone and checking for latest messages/notifications).
We rarely get bored, hence losing out on
the Quality of Boredom, which ought to teach us to think and be creative.
People who were creative in their own style, they need not seek entertainment from the outside (such as smartphones, internet..).
Syaikh reminds us to stop being nostalgic about the past and instead we should think of how to build a better future full of hopes & aspirations...
"Don't lose sight of who you are!"
Syaikh also highlighted how modern people are so stressful, and cited that walking in nature is more powerful than any anti-depressant drug!
"These legs are not created just for us to sit around.."
(Which led me to realise no wonder I love walking alone along the stretch from school to Bugis MRT, bcoz those approx. 500m walk helps me to rewind and reflect, and makes me feel lighter. Ahhh... :))
"Never be shy of your introversion or shyness" - Syaikh addressed the ladies at the beginning of the QnA session.
Shyness is a form of beauty, too(!)
And amongst many other recommendations, Syaikh emphasized on the importance of seemingly simple things (but becoming increasingly neglected these days) such as reading, listening, memorising and mastering a language (acquisition of words).
And oh, how those words inspired me to read More.
Baarakallahu feekum ya Syaikh. Looking forward to listening to more of your inspirational words insyaAllah.
On a side note, I also enjoy reading ukht Diyana Nasir's posts on the books she read. Naiseeee!~~
Baarakallahu feeha.
